Ortur R2
A maker who occasionally personalizes gifts, engraves photos on wood, or creates small leather tags, and values instant setup without assembly, chooses the Ortur R2 20W. Compared to open-frame 20 W diode lasers at 150 EUR less, the R2 adds a Class-1 safe enclosure, built-in camera for automatic material alignment, and an offline touchscreen, removing the need for a dedicated PC. However, a maker who processes batches of 50+ items per day or relies on LightBurn for complex vector work should spend 200 EUR more on an xTool D1 Pro 20 W with riser and enclosure, which retains GRBL compatibility and a larger work area. The R2's proprietary software limits advanced toolpath control but eliminates setup friction for occasional weekly engraving sessions.

Software
The Ortur R2 operates exclusively with Ortur's proprietary mobile and desktop app, offering template-based design, sketch-to-engrave, and material-aware presets. No support for LightBurn, LaserGRBL, or any G-code sender; the control board uses a closed protocol. The built-in color touchscreen allows uploading files via USB for offline, PC-free repetition of the last 8 jobs. This simplifies use but prevents custom power/speed curves or integration with external camera systems.
Reviews from those who use this machine every day will be available in the next version of the platform.
