Elegoo Centauri 2 Combo vs Prusa Research XL

Technical comparison · Fused filament fabrication (FFF/FDM)

In brief

One is a four-color multicolor printer, the other a Prusa with a bigger volume and an open ecosystem. The Prusa Research XL has a 300 × 300 mm bed and 330 mm of height, and costs roughly 1700 to 1900 euros.

Software notes Four-color printing runs through the CANVAS system included in the Combo version. Compatible with PrusaSlicer (open source, with material profiles verified and maintained by Prusa Research), OrcaSlicer, and SuperSlicer, as well as any slicer that exports standard G-code. The firmware is based on Prusa Research's open-source Marlin fork, with input shaping support. Unlike Bambu Lab models, which use a partially proprietary protocol and work best with Bambu Studio, the CORE One L accepts generic G-code via USB, SD card, and PrusaConnect. The user is not locked into a single software ecosystem and can freely modify or update the firmware.

The differences that matter

  • Bed 300 × 300 mm vs 256 × 256 mm, height 330 mm vs 256 mm → a 320 mm tall part prints whole only on the Prusa.
  • Four colors with CANVAS included on the Centauri 2 Combo → a multicolor object comes out of a single print.
  • Open firmware and generic G-code on the Prusa → no mandatory software, and the tuning stays in your hands.

Which one to choose

Choose Centauri 2 Combo if…

You print multicolor objects, up to four colors, with CANVAS included in the Combo version. The trade-off is volume: a part as wide as the Prusa's bed won't fit here.

Choose XL if…

You need bigger parts and a system you can modify: the XL works with PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer or SuperSlicer, accepts generic G-code over USB, SD or PrusaConnect, and its Marlin-based firmware can be updated or modified freely. The trade-off is the outlay, around 1800 euros.
