Fabrics, leather and soft materials
Textiles, leather and soft materials are the realm of the CO2 laser and the plotter blade: cut in thin sheets, engraved and shaped with precision. But here too there's a clear line between what can be worked and what releases fumes to avoid.
How to read the table
Laser — “Yes” for natural fabrics and vegetable-tanned leather; “No” for PVC and PVC-coated materials (toxic fumes) and caution on chrome-tanned leather. Cutting plotter — the heat-free alternative for vinyl, films and thin materials. CNC and 3D printing — “No”: not relevant processes for this family.
Natural fabrics
Cotton, linen, wool felt and the like. The CO2 laser cuts and engraves them with crisp edges; the edge doesn't seal as on synthetics, so fray-prone fabrics may need precautions. Also great with the plotter on thin materials.

Synthetic fabrics
Polyester, nylon and the like. On the laser the heat seals the edge and prevents fraying, often an advantage. But watch out for PVC or PVC-coated materials, which must not be laser-cut because of toxic fumes: always check the composition.

Leather
The CO2 laser cuts and engraves vegetable-tanned leather very well. Chrome-tanned leather, the most common, can release chromium compounds during combustion: on the laser, vegetable tanning is preferred. For faux leathers, check that they aren't PVC.

Rubbers and elastomers
Natural and synthetic rubbers, including laser stamp rubber. Some rubbers engrave well on the laser (e.g. dedicated laser rubber), others release unpleasant or hazardous fumes: composition is decisive, always ventilate.

Working with Fabrics, leather and soft materials: what to know
The CO2 laser cuts and engraves natural fabrics (cotton, linen, wool felt) and vegetable-tanned leather beautifully, with crisp edges; on synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon) the heat seals the edge and prevents fraying, which is sometimes an advantage.
The exceptions matter. Anything made of PVC or PVC-coated (some faux leathers, some oilcloths) falls under the same rule as plastics: it releases chlorine when burned and must not be laser-cut. Chrome-tanned leather (the most common in industrial leather goods) can release chromium compounds during combustion: on the laser, vegetable-tanned leather is preferred. When in doubt about the tanning or the composition of a faux leather, treat it as suspect.
For materials that can't be laser-cut, or when working with vinyl and heat-transfer films (HTV), the drag-knife cutting plotter comes into play: no heat, no fumes, ideal for stickers, stencils and textile applications.
This family has practically no overlap with CNC and 3D printing: these are materials for flat cutting and assembly, not for chip removal or deposition.
