Wood
Wood is the maker's entry-level material: cheap, forgiving and satisfying to finish. But “wood” isn't a single category: birch plywood, MDF and solid walnut behave in opposite ways under the same laser or the same router.
How to read the table
Laser — “With limits” almost always means the cut works but blackens the edge or produces fumes that require extraction (typical of MDF, plywood and oily woods). CNC — “Yes” is the rule for wood; the limits concern chipping and tool wear, not feasibility. 3D printing — “No”: wood isn't printed; “wood-fill” filaments are PLA loaded with wood powder, not real wood.
Solid wood: European hardwoods
Hardwoods of medium-fine grain (oak, beech, ash, maple). Good laser-engraving results on the pale ones; in milling they tend to chip if the tool isn't well sharpened. Tannic species like oak blacken the edge more during laser cutting.

Solid wood: tropical and exotic hardwoods
Dense, often oily species (teak, iroko, wenge, mahogany). The natural oils slow down laser cutting and darken the edges, and make gluing harder; in return they offer great stability and durability.

Solid wood: softwoods (conifers)
Soft, resinous woods (pine, spruce, larch). Fast to cut and mill, but the resin fouls optics and tools, and the knots give irregular edges on the laser. Excellent for prototypes and structures, less so for precision finishes.

Wood-based panels
Engineered panels: plywood, MDF, OSB, particleboard. Laser and milling results depend more on the internal glues than on the species of the outer sheet. MDF and many plywoods release glue fumes when burned: extraction is needed. Rarely food-safe because of the adhesives.

Wood-related non-wood materials
Materials akin to wood in use and working but not woody (cork, bamboo, compressed cellulose derivatives). They cut on the laser with their own parameters and should be assessed case by case rather than by analogy with solid wood.

Working with Wood: what to know
On the laser the problem isn't cutting wood, it's cutting it without scorching the edge. Pale, low-resin woods (birch, poplar, basswood) give clean edges and engrave with sharp contrast; dense, tannic or oily species (walnut, oak, teak) tend toward blackened edges and more smoke, and often need a paper mask over the surface. A diode laser struggles where a CO2 sails through: above 3-4 mm of thickness the diode needs more passes and leaves darker cuts.
MDF deserves a separate warning. It cuts and engraves beautifully, but the panel is held together by urea-based glues that release irritating fumes when burned: you always need extraction and a ventilated space. The same goes for many plywoods, where the result depends on the glue and the inner plies more than on the species of the outer sheet.
In CNC routing, grain direction and tool sharpness are what count: a dull cutting edge tears the fibres and chips the edge, especially on dense hardwoods and thin plywoods. Compression cutters exist precisely to leave clean edges top and bottom on panels.
Two recurring cautions. On food safety: few woods are safe in contact with food in their raw state, and glued panels almost never are (the glue, not the wood, is the problem); the finish always decides. On moisture: solid wood keeps moving with the seasons, so a piece cut to size in winter can warp or open up in summer if it wasn't seasoned properly.
